What a desk shelf is actually for

A desk shelf looks like decoration in photos. On Desk № 001 the Balolo Setup Cockpit Large is the oldest thing on the desk apart from the microphone, and it has outlived three monitors and the desk itself. Here is what it does for a living.

It raises the screen

The top of a monitor should sit around eye level, and a 40-inch panel on its stock stand on a 47-inch desk does not get there. The shelf adds the height without a monitor arm, which matters because the Dell U4025QW weighs about 27 lb and most arms are rated for 34-inch panels. The Large shelf spans 114 cm on a 120 cm desk, so the whole display sits on it with room to spare.

It hides two computers

Under the shelf: the M5 Pro and the M4 mini side by side, the old dock, and every cable that would otherwise be on the desk. The front edge is what you see; the mess is behind it. This is the job that keeps paying: every new device goes under the shelf, not onto the desk.

It holds the small things

The underside has a steel grid that takes Balolo’s own accessories. № 001 runs two trays, a catch-all tray, a tablet holder and a phone holder off it. Loose items off the surface, in reach, without a drawer. The grid only takes Balolo pieces, which is the system’s strength and its lock-in.

What it costs to land in Canada

The shelf was C$299.90 on the line in November 2023 before the order discount, and the same order carried C$310 of accessories. It ships from Germany in euros, so exchange, shipping and probably duties come on top.

“I also cancelled a further Balolo order in April 2026 when the shipping and points did not add up, so the landed cost is real: get the checkout quote before you fall in love with the walnut.” — T.R., owner of Desk № 001

The accessories, ranked

Owner verdicts from the records, best value first.

  1. Trays and the phone holder. Bought again in December 2025; these are what make the grid worth having.
  2. The desk pad. Three years without pilling, which beats the cheaper felt mat before it. Still the one piece the owner would not re-buy on its own at the landed price.
  3. The headphone stand. Matches, works, and takes desk space on a 120 cm desk. The shelf-grid headphone holder would have been the better buy on this width.

Cheaper ways to get the height

If all you need is the screen higher: a bamboo riser is about C$40 and does it. If you want walnut without the grid, Grovemade ships from Oregon. If you want to hide two computers and hang five accessories, the grid is the point and the Balolo is the one to price.

TBD — from the owner. A photo under the shelf, how the second tray is used, and whether the Wall Cockpit from the December 2025 order is installed.
