Clean calls from a home office: audio, lighting, and desk space
What people on the other end actually notice, in the order it matters: audio, then light, then camera. Plus the setup mistake that is easy to make.

There are three different lighting jobs on a working desk and most people buy one lamp and expect it to do all of them. Desk № 001 ended up with three separate purchases, bought over two years, each for one job. This guide is the shortcut.
A desk lamp pointed at the keyboard puts a reflection on the screen. A monitor light bar is built to avoid that: it sits on the top bezel and throws an asymmetric beam forward and down, so the keyboard and any paper are lit and the panel is not. The BenQ ScreenBar Halo has been on № 001 since January 2024, through three monitors, and it clamps onto the curved 40-inch Dell without fuss.
“The round controller lives at the far right of the desk; it is the one thing on the desk that still takes batteries.” — T.R., owner of Desk № 001
The original Halo is discontinued; the Halo 2 is the current model with a rechargeable controller and a larger backlight. Listings mix the two up, so check the model number. If you do not need the backlight, the basic ScreenBar does the front-light job for about half the price.
This is the purchase that changes how you look on a call, and it is not the camera. Light has to come from in front of you and slightly above eye level, or the monitor glow lights you from below and the window behind you turns you into a silhouette. № 001 uses two Logitech Litra Glow panels clipped to the top of the Dell, one each side of the ScreenBar.
“Bought one in December 2025, then a second three months later once I saw what one did to the shadows on the other side of my face.” — T.R., owner of Desk № 001
Two matters. One light gives you a lit side and a shadowed side; the second fills the shadow. The Glow is only 250 lumens, which is fine as a fill in a room with some daylight and weak as the only light in a dark one. If you record more than you call, the Elgato Key Light Air is the step up at about eight times the output.
Everything behind you is set dressing. On № 001 that is two Govee Floor Lamp 2 uprights, one each side of the desk, and a Govee strip for diffused accent light. They are green in the photos because the photos wanted them green.
“On a call they are dimmed to white or off so the colour does not land on my face. Easy to skip if you never point a camera at the desk.” — T.R., owner of Desk № 001
If you want one thing behind the monitor, the Halo 2’s backlight or a plain bias strip does the job for less and with no app.
Daylight from the side is the best face light there is, and № 001 has a window on the left. From about 4 pm in a Victoria winter it stops helping, which is when the Glows earn their place. If your window is behind you, close the blind for calls or move the desk; no lamp fixes a bright window behind your head.
TBD — from the owner. Photos of the desk at call time with each light on and off, and the actual Kelvin and brightness settings he lands on for a 10 am call versus a 5 pm one.

Three years with a walnut desk shelf on a 47-inch desk: the height it gives, the mess it hides, the accessories that earned their place, and the landed cost from Germany.
Nine steps from an empty corner to a desk that runs a workday, in the order the money should go, with what Desk № 001 got right and what it got wrong.
