The problem

A typical hour at my desk has a call open, a spreadsheet I am editing, a dashboard I am reading, and a chat window I am half-ignoring. The usual advice is “get a second monitor.” That is sometimes right and often not, and the difference is about how you switch, not how many pixels you own.

The decision

Ask three questions before buying anything:

  1. Do you read two things at once, or switch between them? Reading side by side (a dashboard while editing the sheet it feeds) rewards width. Switching (call → sheet → call) rewards a fast way to swap, not more glass.
  2. Is your bottleneck legibility or layout? If you keep zooming, you need resolution and size. If you keep dragging windows, you need a layout tool and a habit.
  3. What is physically in front of you? A single large display needs depth from your eyes; two monitors need width on the desk and a stand or arm that lines them up.

What I run and why

TBD — from the owner. This section is written from the owner’s recording once the display model, size, and resolution are confirmed. It covers: the actual app layout during a call-plus-spreadsheet hour, how the small secondary display is used, and what was tried before this layout.

What to check before ordering

  • The connector on your laptop versus the input on the display (and whether one cable can carry video, power, and USB).
  • Whether the display’s resolution is comfortable at its size without scaling tricks.
  • Mount or stand height: eye level should hit the top third of the screen.
  • Whether your desk depth allows the viewing distance a large display needs.

When a second monitor is the wrong fix

If your switching is between a few fixed apps, a keyboard shortcut or a programmable button pad solves the same problem for less money and desk space. See Shortcuts worth a button pad.

What a desk shelf is actually for

Three years with a walnut desk shelf on a 47-inch desk: the height it gives, the mess it hides, the accessories that earned their place, and the landed cost from Germany.
