The home office desk, in the order to buy it

Most desk guides are a shopping list with the expensive things first. This one is in the order the decisions actually depend on each other, because the desk you pick limits the screen, the screen limits the arm, and the room limits all of it. Desk № 001 was bought mostly in that order over three years; where it was not, the note says so.

1. Measure the room, not the desk

Desk № 001 sits in a corner with a wall on the right and a curtain on the left. That one fact decided the desk width (47 inches), ruled out a filing cabinet, forced the storage under the desk, and put the lamps where they are. Before any purchase, measure the usable width, the depth to the wall, and the distance from where your eyes will be to where a screen would stand. Write the three numbers down. Every later step uses them.

2. The desk

Pick the frame for the weight it will carry and the width for the room, then stop. The Desky Dual on № 001 is a 47.2 x 29.5 inch laminate top on a dual-motor frame rated to 140 kg; it cost C$699 in October 2025 and it holds a 27 lb monitor at standing height without drama. The laminate is the entry finish and nobody has noticed.

“The desk is boxed in by a wall on the right and a curtain on the left, which is why every add-on gets fit math first.” — T.R., owner of Desk № 001

What to check: the leg-to-leg opening (33 to 35 inches on this desk), because everything that hangs underneath has to fit between the legs. Full write-up in the Desky review.

3. The computer

Buy the computer for the work, not the desk. № 001 runs browser tabs, spreadsheets and ad dashboards, so a Mac mini M5 Pro with 48 GB is the work machine and the older M4 mini stays on for background jobs. Two small desktops under a shelf take less space than one laptop on a stand with a dock beside it. If you move between rooms, a laptop wins and this step is cheaper.

4. The screen

This is where the money goes and where the first three steps pay off. One 40-inch 5K2K panel (Dell U4025QW) replaced two monitors on № 001 because the work is reading a dashboard beside a spreadsheet, not switching between full-screen apps. The depth measurement from step 1 matters: a 2500R curve wants your eyes about an arm’s length away.

The setting that makes it work: 2560 x 1080 HiDPI, a 2:1 map to the native panel, which is the sharpest option for dense text. And the trap: daisy-chaining a second screen silently dropped the Dell to 60 Hz until Thunderbolt Daisy Chain was set to Optimized in the OSD. Details in the display review.

5. The shelf

A desk shelf does two jobs: it raises the screen toward eye level and it hides what is behind it. The Balolo Setup Cockpit has been on № 001 since November 2023 and has outlived three monitors and a desk. Both Mac minis, the dock and the cables live under it; the trays and phone holder hang off its grid.

“Get the checkout quote before you fall in love with the walnut.” — T.R., owner of Desk № 001

It ships from Germany in euros, so the landed cost in Canada is the real number. A C$40 bamboo riser does the height job if that is all you need.

6. Keyboard and mouse

Buy for the hours, not the features. A low-profile tenkeyless (G915 X TKL) because the mouse needs the lateral room on a 47-inch desk; an MX Master 4 because the free-spinning wheel is what makes long spreadsheets bearable. Whether the Master 4 earned its upgrade over the 3S is, in the owner’s words, still an open question. The 3S is routinely US$75 to 90 on sale.

7. Light the desk, then the face

Two separate purchases that get confused. A monitor light bar (ScreenBar Halo) lights the keyboard and paper without glare on the panel. Two small panels above the screen (Litra Glow, one each side) light your face for calls. № 001 bought the second Glow three months after the first, once the shadow on the other side of the face was obvious on camera. From about 4 pm in a Victoria winter these matter; before that the window does the work. The full version is in Light the desk, then the face.

8. The microphone

Position beats price. A Wave:3 on a C$55 Desky boom arm swings to six inches from the mouth for calls and out of the way for focus. It is the oldest thing on the desk apart from the shelf. If you only buy one call upgrade, it is the arm.

9. Storage and the chair

The two decisions № 001 made in a hurry. Storage worked out: with no floor space and no paper to file, a C$99.90 Ultra Slim drawer under the desk does the job the C$549 cabinet would have. The chair did not: a C$380 faux-leather chair bought the same day as the desk.

“The most honest answer is that it was the cheapest decision on the desk and the one I would revisit first.” — T.R., owner of Desk № 001

Buy the chair last, but do not buy it as an afterthought. Seat height against the desk’s lowest setting is the number to check.

What this order gets you

Nothing bought twice because the earlier purchase did not fit. The total on № 001 is C$11,900 in Canadian receipts over three years, with the display as 24% of it. The upgrade order from here is in Start Here.

TBD — from the owner. What he would do differently if starting from an empty corner today, and the order he actually bought things in versus this one.

What a desk shelf is actually for

Three years with a walnut desk shelf on a 47-inch desk: the height it gives, the mess it hides, the accessories that earned their place, and the landed cost from Germany.
